The global community face climate change and the COVID-19 pandemic, both of which demands resilient systems and smart approaches including energy sector. Moreover, because of different circumstances, ASEAN nations are at different development stages and paces in transforming energy sector and energy education to better respond to such challenges. Now is the time for the ASEAN to collectively respond to regional and global issues using smart technologies and adaptive systems. For those lagging behind in the energy sector, it is time for transforming the infrastructure, education and research. With unforeseeable challenges such as the new normal imposed by the COVID-19 and the fourth industrial revolution, energy security and sustainability become one of the priorities in ASEAN. With the collective and adaptive effort by all ASEAN nations, sustainable, smart and resilient energy systems and technologies by the region and for the region should be ASEAN’s common goal in the energy sector. As part of the contribution to this aim, the motto of this first symposium is.
